Various juvenile fish species are often seen under drift kelp including small baitfish.
Kelp forests are playing a key role in the establishment of Marine Protected Areas MPAs along the California coast. The goal being to set aside large areas of coastline as protected no take zones.
The round bulbs at the base of each blade are called pneumatocysts. Each one is a gas filled bladder that provides buoyancy. Collectively they assist in keeping the kelp plant in an upright position.
