Old Town San Diego is the oldest settled area in San Diego and is the site of the first European settlement in what is now California.
The nearby Presidio was built in 1769, and by the 1820's Old Town was the beginnings of San Diego. This area was the heart of San Diego until the 1860s, when development grew further south and offered easier access to the harbor.
Today, Old Town is a popular tourist and locals destination with hotels, shops and restaurants, as well as Old Town San Diego State Historic Park and Presidio Park, both of which are listed on the National Register of Historic Places.
