Although it doesnt always happen side by side racing is what the fans come to see.
Each year in September the unlimited hydroplanes return to San Diego's Mission Bay to put on a show.
The unlimited boats were once powered by World War II vintage Alison V12 piston engines used in P51 Mustang and other fighter planes. The current generation of boats use jet turbine engines. Their average speed on the 2.5 mile course exceed 150 MPH.
