Vernal pools are seasonal, present in the spring then drying up in late spring or summer.
Due to urban development the vast majority of Vernal Pools in Southern California have been lost.
There are only fourteen undisturbed sites known that remain in Riverside County, thirteen of which are located within the Santa Rosa Plateau Reserve.
The Santa Rosa Plateau is an upland plateau and extension of the Santa Ana Mountains in Riverside County, southern California.
Located near Murrieta and Temecula and covering roughly 8,400 acres.
