Since the late eighteen hundreds the South Bay Salt Works has been located at the very southern end of San Diego Bay. Its evaporation ponds cover almost 1200 acres and produce over 75000 tons of salt each year.
The salt is extracted from seawater simply by filling large shallow ponds and allowing the sun to slowly evaporate the water.
The Salt Works is the oldest continuously operated business in San Diego and also one of the oldest remaining wooden structures in the city.
