Pups are nursed for a short four to eight weeks before being left to fend for themselves. Weaned pups group together spending much of their time onshore for an additional few months but soon move ever farther offshore to forage for food.
Largest of all seals. The species was hunted nearly to extinction for its oil. By the late 1800s there were fewer than 20 known individuals remaining.
Elephant Seals are among the deepest diving marine mammals. Bulls have been documented to dive to depths of over 2600 feet and stay submerged for over 20 minutes.
Mature males are covered with scars from their battles with other bulls for dominance over the females on their section of beach.
Bulls can weigh up to 5000 pounds and are up to 15 feet in length.
Male or bull Elephant Seals are much larger than females of the species. They can reach lengths of over 14 feet or more, while females are normally more in the 8 foot range.
