The New River is one of the most severely polluted rivers of its size in the United States. It runs only 15 miles from the town of Mexicali in Mexico north to the Salton Sea in Southern California. Its contaminated with raw sewage industrial waste including heavy metals such as selenium arsenic and mercury and farming generated pollutants such as pesticides and fertilizers.
In addition to the sewage and industrial waste pollution, the New River flows directly through several city dumps as it passes through Mexicali.
Along with the pollution, litter such as discarded plastic bottles and styrofoam cups and containers collect along the banks of the New River.
