The Wave is a spectacular area of sandstone formations twisted into the shapes of breaking waves pillars cones and mushrooms.
An ancient sea laid down layers of sediment deposits which hardened to form the multicolored sandstone rock. Over eons the actions of water the cycles of baking heat and subfreezing temperatures and wind have formed its complex undulating shapes.
The deep reds of the rock and their shapes appear to change with the seasons and time of day.
