The red rock formations in Papago Park, located near in Phoenix, Arizona.

The signature red sandstone buttes of Phoenix Arizona. Papago Park has an interesting history. In 1879 the area was designated as an Indian reservation for the Maricopa and Pima tribes. In 1914 it was declared a National Monument which it remained until 1932. During World War II it was home to a German prisoner of war camp. Papago received its current designation as a city park in 1959 when it was sold to the city of Phoenix.

The rocks are sedimentary formations colored red by their high iron oxide-hematite content. Their interesting shapes and form are the result of water and wind erosion.
