Coal fired power plants are required to help provide the ever increasing electricity needs for the metropolitan areas of the southwest. They have however had a significant impact on the air quality of the Colorado Plateau.
Even with the addition of modern scrubbers designed to lower emissions coal fired power plants release huge quantities of sulfur dioxide nitrogen oxides and particles into the environment.
Water quality is also impacted due to the large amounts of water required in the mining process.
