Originally opened in 1898, the Julian Hotel is the oldest continuously operated hotel in southern California and is listed in the National Register of Historic Places.

Julian was founded as a California gold rush town. In 1869 a cattleman Fred Coleman found a few flecks of gold in a small creek.

Soon displaced confederate civil war veterans flocked to the area to seek their fortunes.

One of them was Mike Julian after which the town is named.

The gold rush was short lived but ranching farming and later apple orchards followed.

Apples pies and cider became Julian's gold.
