Often found foraging along desert washes either early or late in the day when temperatures are not extreme.
Individuals can live to 100 years or more.
The Desert Tortoise is a herbivore feeding almost exclusively on plants such as desert wildflowers and other annuals, young cactus and their fruit or flowers.
Range: Mojave desert regions of central and southern California. At elevations of up to about 3500 feet.
