Early each year Gray Whales pass along the California coast on their annual migration to the lagoons of Baja California Mexico. They are mottled gray in color and can achive lengths of up to 45 feet. Although hunted nearly to extinction they have largely recovered due to the protection of the marine mammal protection act.

Gray Whales feed mainly on crustaceans which they collect by turning on their side and scooping up mud and sand sediments from the sea floor.

Their fall migration covers over 6000 miles from Alaska along the west coasts of Canada the United States and Mexico. Their destination is the lagoons along the coast of southern Baja Mexico. Gray Whale calves are born each year in the warm shallow waters of the lagoons.
