Listed as threatened in 1993. Its native habitat coastal sage scrub and California sagebrush has been heavily impacted by a combination of urban development livestock grazing off-highway vehicle use and military training.
Most often are seen flitting from branch to branch in thick undergrowth.
Male has black crown and beak.
