Individuals tagged off the Baja Coast have been found to cross the Pacific nearly to Hawaii and then return each year.

Each individual has a unique countershading color pattern, having a dark coloration above then abruptly transitioning to white below the midline.

They are an incredibly successful species, examples of their fossil vertebrae have been dated to the Pliocene Age or about one-million years old.

Weight can range to over five thousand pounds and has been documented to have a lifespan of well over twenty years.

Their genus name Carcharodon comes from the Greek words carcharos meaning ragged and odon meaning tooth.

Range: Found worldwide primarily in temperate and subtropical waters
