A large tern species with heavy orange bill and deeply forked tail.

Found only along the immediate coast and open ocean.

White head has black cap in spring and early summer.

Often hovers before diving for baitfish. Will also pirate from other birds such as Pelicans.
Range: Southern Atlantic and Pacific Coasts south into Mexico
