In September of 1909 the Santa Monica Municipal Pier opened to the public after sixteen months of construction.

By the early seventies it had deteriorated to the point the city voted to have it demolished.

Locals rallied to have it saved and successfully had it declared a Los Angeles County Historical Site.

Later its Hippodrome and carousel were designated as a National Historic Landmark.

By 1988 the pier was completely refurbished in its current form.
