Papago Park has an interesting history. In 1879 the area was designated as an Indian reservation for the Maricopa and Pima tribes.

In 1914 it was declared a National Monument which it remained until 1932. During World War II it was home to a German prisoner of war camp.

Papago received its current designation as a city park in 1959 when it was sold to the city of Phoenix.
