The pumpkin shaped concretions were originally formed underground. Now exposed to the wind and desert elements, they are slowly eroding away.

Anza Borrego Desert is California’s largest state park where temperatures can be in the triple digits year-round. The park covers 600,000 acres of desert, including badlands, palm canyons, rock formations, slot canyons, wildflower displays and cactus.

Geologists and paleontologists believe this parched desert was once underwater, and home to fish, sea turtles, and sharks. Remnants of its former life can be found, including seashell fossils and wild rock formations.
