Shortly after sunrise, as if on cue, the Egrets take flight simultaneously.

This member of the heron family is 1 1/2 to 2 feet long, and can weigh up to 20 pounds.

Egrets nest in large colonies, near water and often with other shorebird birds. The Salton Sea is a preferred environment for nesting.
