Euphorbia pulcherrima
In 1928 the United States Ambassador to Mexico Joel Roberts Poinsett introduced the plant to the US. Hence the name Poinsettia. It is almost universally known as the Christmas flower. The brilliant red is actually not produced by flower petals at all but rather by clusters of leaves that turn red triggered by the extended darkness of winter nights.
