 Whale Food! Krill Ball

A diver swimming through a small Krill ball. Krill mass together and form flowing red-orange clouds underwater. When driven to the surface by upwelling currents or predators they can turn large areas of the oceans surface red.

Krill form the base of a critical food chain. Many species of fish and marine birds rely on them for food. But its the baleen whales such as the Blue and Fins, that are likely the most dependent on Krill. In fact this tiny shrimp like crustacean, is nearly the exclusive food source of the largest animal to have ever lived, the Blue Whale. If you can believe wikipedias Blue Whale entry, a mature blue can eat 40 million individual Krill or some 7,000 pounds per day. This translates to a daily calorie intake of some 1.5 million and can produce a whale ranging to over 80 feet in length, with weights in excess of 180 metric tons.
