 Royal Tern

Royal Terns as with most tern species spend the vast majority of their lives foraging and feeding on the open ocean. We see them off the coast of San Diego through the spring and summer months. They often only come ashore to nest in groups called colonies on islands or along remote stretches of the coast. The nests are simple ground scrapes. I photographed this group in La Jolla just after a late season storm had cleared through.
