Mission Bay Late Light Panoramic

 Mission Bay Late Light Panoramic

We’ve recently had some classic San Diego sunsets. The suns position along with late season clouds often combine for some great photo opportunities this time of year. This panoramic was taken several minutes after sunset at the peak of the afterglow. Encompasses Sea World and Ocean Beach on the left all of Mission Bay center to Pacific Beach on the right. Sea World tower is lit up in lights at the far left. At a distance of over fifty miles, San Clemente Island is clearly visible on the horizon towards the right side of the frame.

Arizona Meteor Crater

 Arizona Meteor Crater

Was recently in Flagstaff for Triumphest 2012, an annual British car show and decided to have a look at the Arizona Meteor Crater. Knew this had the potential to be interesting but seeing it firsthand, I have to say this is one impressive hole in the ground. Its believed to have been formed by a meteorite fragment that was little more than about 150 feet across. Some 50,000 years ago, it collided with the earth at a speed of about 26,000 miles per hour. This resulted in a crater with an approximate circumference of 2.4 miles and a depth of some 500 feet.

Alaskan Brown Bear Catching Salmon

 Alaskan Brown Bear Catching Salmon

Was just going back through some material I had taken in Alaska a few years back. The highlight of the trip was having the opportunity to watch and photograph Alaskan Brown Bears actively catching salmon.

It was surprising to see the widely differing fishing techniques and skill levels of individual brown bears. Generally the younger the bear the less successful they were. Young animals often spent all afternoon dashing and jumping back and forth across the creek most often coming up just a whisker short of their salmon meal. Mature males on the other hand had much more refined technique but often seemed to lack motivation. Likely already completely plugged with the days catch they would stand in the creek in one spot for long periods or sit on the bank almost dozing in the afternoon sun. However in their apparent slumber, they remained completely in tune with the movements of the salmon. The slightest ripple at the surface or flash of silver sent them bolting like a freight train into the creek.

But it was the females or sows with cubs that seemed to make the best fishermen. This sow had two cubs and for the time I had to observe her she was out catching the males three to one or better. She would take her time wading out into the creek but once making her move, rarely came up empty.

La Jolla Concours d’Elagance Car Show

La Jolla Concours d’Elagance Car Show

One of the bigger annual events in La Jolla each year is the Concours d’Elagance Car Show. Over the years it’s grown into one of the premier shows on the West Coast, in the same league with Pebble Beach. This was the first year I had gone and I have to say it was not a bad way to spend an afternoon. The day started with gray overcast skies, even threatening rain at one point but by around eleven the clouds parted and the cars were shining. Between the blue sky, ocean backgrounds, green grass and of course row upon row of classic and exotic cars the camera just had to come out.

 Palomar Mountain Observatory

One of those days when you arrive at a location and the light is 180 degrees out from where you would like. Given the harsh lighting I had pretty much put the camera away when I realized maybe there was a composition that could work. Out came the 16mm fisheye and by stopping down to f11 the lens aperture blades helped produce the sun star pattern. What better composition than the Palomar Observatory with our closest star in the background.

 California Brown Pelican Diving

This was an interesting recent photo op. I was driving along the back most part of Mission Bay where Tecolote Creek flows in. Right up close to the bridge there were six or eight Pelicans actively plunge feeding. It’s quite common for them to hang around this spot but I had never seen them diving from the air here as the water is very shallow. Didn’t have time to stop but later that day decided to swing back by and sure enough there was still pelicans there diving. By the next morning they were gone and I have not seen them there since. Never was able to see what they were feeding on. From the vantage point of the bridge they were basically diving right in front of you. Took a bunch of frames and although backlit I like this one where the lines of the pelicans wings are echoed in the shoreline behind.

 San Diego Skyline Reflection

This shot of the San Diego Skyline was taken a couple months ago on a particularly calm morning. What makes it rather unique is the reflection on the mirrored surface of the bay. Most days begin with at least some breeze which creates ripples and boat traffic also conspires to break up the calm surface. As the day progresses, you can count on more wind which further reduces the odds of a mirrored surface.

2011 Last Frame - Mission Bay Sunset

Well it’s New Year’s Eve 2011. Another year has flown by. Figured since I’m sitting here in the depths of another San Diego winter I should post a last frame that captures the experience. Have to admit, the fog did roll in today so this late light shot was actually taken a couple weeks ago.

Wishing you and yours all the best in 2012!
