 In the news: Brown Pelicans

Yesterday the US Fish and Wildlife Service officially removed the Brown Pelican from the Endangered Species list. A recently completed four year study initiated by a petition from the La Jolla based Endangered Species Recovery Council, concluded the Brown Pelican no longer required protected status.

They now join several other recovery success stories, such as the American Bald Eagle, whose range and numbers have rebounded sufficiently to be removed from the list. Brown Pelicans were first listed back in 1970 after their numbers had crashed due to DDT poisoning. At the low point its believed there was less than 10,000 individuals remaining. Today their estimated numbers are over 650,000 in California.
