 Antelope Valley Poppy Reserve

Lancaster California

There are a number of variables that all must come together for a good California Poppy photo op. Poppies are normally in bloom by mid April. But on any given year even reliable areas like Antelope Valley can be inconsistent both in terms of quantity and timing of the peak. Poppies need a good amount of moisture during the winter months then consistent clear warm days in the spring. This year had all the makings of a good year and after hearing a few positive reports, I decided to make a bonsai run to Lancaster and have a look. I rolled into town late on Saturday April 17th and grabbed a room, then started scouting early on Sunday morning.

Poppy blooms close up at night then open again, if given full sun, by mid morning. While driving around early it was obvious that this was a good year. By mid morning it proved to be a very good year. Even given a bloom as good as this, all it takes is a bit of wind to shutdown the photo conditions and Lancaster is renowned for its wind. I had been here a couple times before and the wind had consistently been a problem. But it stayed nearly dead calm into early afternoon. Standing in these huge fields you could only imagine what the Central Valley must have looked like before agriculture and development.
