In the news: Pigeon Point Lighthouse a Decaying Coastal Landmark

Pigeon Point Lighthouse is one of the historic landmark structures of the California Coast. The tallest of a chain of lighthouses built along the central coast in the eighteen hundreds during and after the California Gold Rush. They were built to guide the wooden schooners of the time safely to and from San Francisco Bay.

Today Pigeon Points once gleaming white structure sits fenced in an ever advancing state of rust and decay. Its been closed to the public since 2001, after some of its upper iron structure rusted to the point that it broke away and fell to the base of the tower. There have been several attempts to put a preservation plan in place. Unfortunately one of the best options which had been in the works for several years, was for the federal government to transfer ownership to the California State Parks Service. This was a key part of a five million dollar public/private restoration plan. Given the current state budget and bureaucratic conditions this project is now unlikely to ever happen.
