 Desert Bighorn Sheep

Once widely distributed in mountainous desert areas of the southwest, the Peninsular Bighorn Sheep has been heavily impacted by human encroachment, drought and disease. All that remains of the Desert Bighorn Sheep, one of its sub species, is somewhere less than four hundred animals. The majority of these are located in Anza Borrego State Park in Southern California. These remaining groups continue to be the focus of much research and effort to try to assist in their eventual recovery.

The Desert Bighorn Sheep is an extremely reclusive animal, a chance sighting is usually limited to a quick glimpse on a far off ridgeline. But in heavy drought years, they can be forced down to lower elevations in search of food and water. On these years, fortunate hikers can chance upon one or more Bighorn feeding along popular trails within a couple miles of their parked cars.
