| Range: Giant Kelp or Macrocystis is found from Alaska to
Magdalena Bay, Baja California. Giant Kelp grows along rocky coastal reefs generally in depths of 20 to 80 feet. Each plant is anchored to the rock substrate by a large root like structure called a holdfast. Growing in ideal conditions they can reach lengths of 100 feet or more within 1 to 2 years. At the base of each kelp blade is a rounded gas filled bladder which float the branch like structures of the plant called fronds. A kelp forest supports an incredibly diverse community of marine life, made up of nearly 800 known species. |
