| Range: California Channel Islands to Cedros Island Baja
California. In the late eighteen hundreds the Guadalupe Fur Seal was hunted nearly to extinction. At that time only seven individuals were known to remain. Due to extensive conservation efforts and the protection afforded by the 1972 Marine Mammal Protection Act these eared seals have mounted an amazing comeback. Although their historic range covers from Central and Southern California to Cedros Island off Baja California, they are now rarely seen other than in large numbers around Guadalupe Island Mexico. |
