| Range: Gulf of Alaska to Baja California Males can reach lengths of 15 to 20 feet and weigh over 7000 pounds. By 1892 Northern Elephant Seals had been hunted nearly to extinction for their fat & oil. At their lowest point, it is believed that only 20 individuals remained on the remote Guadalupe Island off Mexico. Now protected by law they have largely recovered and continue to repopulate along the California coast. |
