 Purse or Tuna Seiner

Tuna Seiner retrieves a set for Yellowfin Tuna off the west coast of Baja Mexico. Seiners have a terrible reputation for killing dolphin and other species as what is called bycatch. Tuna are often found in association with pods of dolphin. In the past seiners would wrap both tuna and dolphin in their nets with little or no regard for the dolphin. Thousands of dolphin were killed in this way. These practices are in theory now band nearly worldwide, but due to lack of enforcement do still take place.

Techniques have been developed to minimize dolphin from being wrapped initially and to herd any that are caught out prior to the net being closed and retrieved. Properly done Tuna Seining can be a very targeted form of commercial fishing producing a minimal amount of bycatch. Much better than other indiscriminate forms of fishing, such as longlining.
