 Leopard Shark

Quite a few years ago, I had just completed a dive off La Jolla Shores and was wading in to shore. A woman standing in about three feet of water asked how was your dive? You didn't see any sharks did you?

Well as it so happened, the only critters of interest I had seen were some good numbers of Leopard Sharks in the shallows at the end of the dive. I mentioned this and it just happened a couple were swimming by at that moment, so I pointed them out. The women turned ashen and without another word turned and ran out of the water, as far as I know all the way back to her car in the parking lot.

This photo was taken a couple weeks ago when a particularly clean body of water pushed inshore, for a couple days. Leopard Sharks are extremely difficult to approach. I free-dove these guys breath holding until my lungs were on fire. The slightest stray bubble or shutter click sends them bolting.
