In the news: Mount Redoubt Volcano

Experts are now closely monitoring the Mount Redoubt Volcano in Alaska which is showing signs of an imminent eruption. It is one of several volcanoes in a chain running down the west side of Cook Inlet and one of two active volcanoes located within Clark Lake National Park and Preserve.

Redoubt is roughly 100 miles southwest of Anchorage. It last erupted in December of 1989. After the initial eruption, it continued to spread volcanic ash throughout the Anchorage region for the next five months. Geologists are measuring increased gas emissions and their seeing some snowmelt on the summit, along with substantial seismic activity. From the local Anchorage paper - Mount Redoubt is still rumbling and simmering.

This photo was taken late last year. At the point I pressed the shutter I can remember the Alaskan bush pilot saying - Its been dormant for years, apparently convinced it could never come to life again. This happened to be the morning that Sarah Palin had been announced as McCains running mate. The pilots comment - He cant lose with Palin on the ticket!
