Harbor Seal with Great White Shark Bite

This Harbor Seal displays the classic half moon shaped wound from a shark attack. Although impossible to confirm, the Great White is really the only species of shark off California that could produce a bite of this size. Seals have layers of fat to insulate them from cool ocean temperatures while spending hours foraging offshore. A thick skin and these layers of fat also help to protect them when attacked by sharks. Even with wounds of this size, seals often recover with only a scar left from the encounter.
