 Utah Coyote Buttes

North Coyote Buttes is an amazing geologic area made up of swirling Utah sandstone. Its layered burnt orange rock worn by wind and water erosion has been twisted into smooth otherworldly shapes. The best known of these formations is called the Wave, a huge sandstone face formed into the perfect arching shape of a breaking wave.

If you decide to visit be aware a permit is required and it is a moderate hike of about eight miles round trip. Also go prepared for weather extremes. We did it as a late season trip. The temperature was minus twelve as we left the parking area to hike in the low seventies by midday. Summer temperatures can push well into the triple digits. For more information on visiting the wave see the Zion National Park website.
