 Dorado or Mahi

Dorado or Mahi mahi under a Kelp Patty. Went back to the archives for this one. This is a male or bull Dorado. We spotted him hiding under drift kelp along with a single female, off the coast of San Diego. After two of us entered the water, it didnt take long to determine why they were glued to the underside of the kelp. A good sized Mako Shark was stalking them from below. For the next twenty minutes or so we photographed the extremely agitated fish with one eye, while using the other to keep watch for the Mako.

At one point I had the bull lined up in the viewfinder when for an instant it registered that he had disappeared. This was immediately followed by a sharp pain in my left shoulder. The bull had head-butted me about as hard as I had ever been hit before. He continued this aggressive posturing the entire time we were in the water. Have photographed Mahi underwater several times since and never experienced this behavior again.
