La Jolla California Big Wave Surfing

Due to the contours of the coastline and its relatively protected location, the ocean off La Jolla Cove is most often quite calm. But in the winter when the right conditions come together, the Cove as locals say can Go Off. A large winter low pressure system must form in the North Western Pacific and travel at just the right angle towards Southern California. Huge wave sets form in the open ocean and are pushed ahead of the storm. When it does come together, waves with faces exceeding thirty feet break over shallow reef structure more than a quarter mile offshore. A perfect day begins with crisp morning air, clear skies and a slight offshore wind. The breeze gives final shape to the monster waves and blows white mist off their tops. For only the most experienced its Game On!
